Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Written by Skyler Lambert

Our platform uses Web Sockets for bi-directional communication between the devices joined to a deposition. We use both the HTTPS and WSS protocols (encrypted communication on port 443 only).

Note: we frequently see connection issues when people pass all their network traffic through an office VPN. If you are connected to a VPN, try connecting without it.

Checking your connection before you join

On both the "Join a deposition" web page and our tablet app, our system automatically checks that it can open a connection to our Web Socket server. If the connection fails, an error bar appears at the bottom of the page. Click the bar to see more detail about what the issue is.

If you make a change to your connection, you can navigate to https://login.agilelaw.com/site/login#join and wait approximately 5 seconds. If there is still an issue connecting, the red bar at the bottom will reappear.

If you do not have connection issues but continue to experience problems, please chat with us so we can help address the issue.

What you'll see if your connection drops during a session

AgileLaw keeps a live connection open during a deposition so that reveals, annotations, and page turns stay in sync for everyone. If that connection is briefly interrupted — for example, a Wi-Fi hiccup or a network switch — AgileLaw tries to reconnect quietly in the background and keeps you informed.

On the web app, a small banner appears at the top center of the screen:

  • "Connection lost. Reconnecting — live updates are paused." (amber) AgileLaw is re-establishing the connection. You can keep reading and scrolling through documents while this shows; only live updates from other participants (new reveals, page turns, annotations) are paused until you're reconnected.

  • "Connection restored. Live updates resumed." (green) You're back in sync. This confirmation clears on its own after a couple of seconds.

The banner never blocks the screen — you can keep working while it's visible.

AgileLaw retries several times over about 30 seconds. If it still can't reconnect after that, you'll see a full Connection Lost dialog with a Retry button so you can re-establish the session manually.

On a tablet / the mobile app, you'll instead see a full-screen "reconnecting" wait spinner while the connection is restored.

Tip: If the banner keeps returning, your network connection is likely unstable. A wired connection or a stronger Wi-Fi signal is the most reliable fix.
